I couldn't stop laughing when I read this...
so, after the 1992 election in Fiji, Rabuka made his submission to Ganilau (the son to the very GG that he didn't NOT help in ousting in 1987...) suggested to import Chinese labor to work on cane farms vacated by Indo-Fijians tenant farmers (Indo-Fijians are basically second generation onwards of Indians labors brought in by the Brits in 1887, borned in Fiji...) -- (Brij V. Lal, 1992, p.318)
The whole point of 1987 coups was because of the Indians in Fiji coming into power... now they want to bring in the Chinese? What makes him think that the Chinese will be politically impartial? .... It just shows how greed for power can vacillate someone's rational thoughts.
ZOMG... it's not bad enough that M'sia 'improved' their own country by ethnic "categorization"... they even INFLUENCED Fiji in excluding the minorities (or rather, non-majorities. Can't actually call them minorities coz as a collective, they constitute more than 40 percent of Fiji's population).
read this:wow, the son's outdone the daddy! Well atleast the Son's an authentic first settler in Fiji since more than 3500 years ago... unlike the daddy... *ahem*.... claimed... *ahem* ...self-proclaimed... hmm...
"Indo-Fijians were to be completely excluded from participation in national politics. Following the Malaysian example, the council wanted Fijians to be given fixed shares in all business ventures in the country...".
(Lal, 1992, p.288)
and this is just the economic sector.
